How is Recycled PET Flakes (rPET) Made?
The first step before producing rPET flakes is the collection and sorting of post-consumer PET plastics, generally in the form of used bottles and other packaging items. Those plastics are sorted so that other contaminants are removed, leaving only pure PET material for processing. The sorted PET was then shredded into small pieces and washed with water and detergents after undergoing a series of clean-up processes to remove the impurities like labels, caps, and residues.
Second, the deburring of the PET flakes entails decontamination, which might include drying and treatment for high-purity level. The cleaned flakes are fed into an extruder where they get melted down and formed into new shapes or further into pellets, ready for use in a wide range of subsequent applications.
