How is Recycled PET Chips (rPET) Made?
rPET chips are produced in the clean and efficient recycling process that recycles post-consumer PET bottles to clean raw materials. This process begins by collecting PET bottles which get sorted, cleansed, and removed of all contaminants as well as labels. The bottles are then shredded in flakes for further washing. The flakes of PET are then melted and extruded into long strands, cooled, and cut into uniform lengths called rPET chips. Those chips are a greener material that takes the place of virgin plastic and is crucial in curtailing the tremendous waste of plastics and bringing about a circular economy.
The rPET chips are produced using the latest technology. Saheb Fibre Pvt. Ltd. recycles 87.5 tons of PET bottles every day, and this shows considerable concern towards sustainability and on how the company is part of solving the plastic waste crisis in the world.
Main Steps to Produce rPET Chips:
- Collection: Collect post-consumer PET plastic bottles from recycling programs or waste facilities so that they do not end up in the landfills.
- Sorting and Cleaning: Bottle cap removal as well as label removal incorporating non-PET materials attached to the bottles will be removed for removal of contamination. Thus, the bottles will be cleaned
- Shredding: The cleaned bottles will be shredded into smaller sizes of PET flakes for easier handling during subsequent processing.
- Washing and Decontamination: This is the last step of washing to remove all contaminants and special techniques that ensure production of highly quality flakes based on an application.
- Melting and Extrusion: Flakes of pure PET melt down into long strands of plastic using an extruder.
- Cutting: The strand is cooled, then cut into uniform rPET chips that can be reutilized again in several applications such as packaging and clothing. This recycling process doesn't only minimize the usage of virgin plastic but also saves resources and supports a healthy future where used bottles turn out to be valuable rPET chips.
